Camp Kitchen for a Lexus GX (470, 460, 550): Drawers, Plate Systems, or a Portable Box
The Lexus GX has quietly become one of the most popular overland platforms in the country, and every owner hits the same kitchen question: drawers, a bolt-in plate system, or a portable box that comes out when the trip is over. The answer depends more on which GX you own than on which kitchen you like, because the 470, 460, and 550 load very differently from the back.
Three generations, three different cargo areas
Lexus doesn't publish usable floor measurements for the GX, and the spec sites list cargo width as "N/A." What you can work from is the published volume, owner tape measurements, and how each generation handles its rear seats and rear door:
| GX 470 (2003–2009) | GX 460 (2010–2023) | GX 550 (2024+) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rear door | Side-hinged, swings toward the road | Side-hinged (right hinge), swings toward the road | Top-hinged power liftgate with separately opening glass |
| Third row | Removable | Fold-into-floor, not removable | Three-row trims, or two-row Overtrail |
| Cargo behind second row | About 43 in deep, 43.5 in between wheel wells, up to 54 in wide above them, 41.5 in tall (owner measured, third row out) | About 46.7 cu ft with the third row folded | About 40.2 cu ft (three-row, third row folded) or 45.6 cu ft (two-row Overtrail) |
| Behind the third row | Not applicable with the third row removed | About 11.6 cu ft | About 10.3 cu ft |
The cubic feet tell you less than you'd hope. On the 460, owners point out that the hideaway third row lowers usable cargo height compared with the 470, whose seats simply unbolt. On the 550, choosing the two-row Overtrail is the single biggest kitchen decision you'll make: Lexus dropped the third row on that trim specifically to free up cargo room, and that's why most of the new plate kits are built for non-third-row trucks only.
Treat every owner number as plus or minus an inch, and measure your own truck before you buy anything that has to fit to the inch. Our vehicle camp kitchen guide walks through the same measuring logic for trucks, vans, and trailers.
The side-hinged door changes where you cook
This is what separates the 470 and 460 from a 4Runner. Both older GX generations use a side-swinging rear door instead of a liftgate, hinged on the right side for the US market, so the open door blocks the passenger side and you load from the driver side. A 2004 GX 470 road test complained that it makes unloading large cargo onto a busy street awkward, and owners on Club Lexus have been debating it ever since. Lexus took the hint: the 2024 GX 550 switched to a power liftgate with a glass window that opens on its own.
For a kitchen, that means two different layouts:
- GX 470 and 460: there's no roof over the back of the truck. The open door works as a windbreak on the passenger side, so set the stove behind the bumper on the driver side, with its own table or stand. At a trailhead pull-off, park so the open side faces away from traffic before you start pulling gear out. GX 460 owners also note the rear glass opens separately, which is handy for grabbing a lighter without swinging the whole door open.
- GX 550: the raised liftgate gives you overhead cover from sun and drizzle, the same setup 4Runner owners use. Keep the burner behind the bumper rather than under the gate, and never cook in the cargo area itself.
Either way, the cook surface ends up on a folding table behind the truck. A table at proper counter height is the most important piece of a GX kitchen that nobody budgets for.
Drawers: the classic GX 470 and 460 build
Drawer kits are the traditional GX upgrade, and the published specs make the tradeoff clear. Front Runner's kit for the Prado 120 and GX 470 measures about 56.3 inches wide, 34.8 inches deep, and 13.4 inches tall, weighs about 64.6 kg (roughly 142 pounds), and one US retailer lists it at $2,393. Its kit for the Prado 150 and GX 460 is about 54.4 inches wide, 35 inches deep, and 13.1 inches tall, weighs about 74.4 kg (roughly 164 pounds), and is listed as only suitable for trucks with the third-row seats, which stay in place during installation. Each drawer is rated at 250 pounds.
Do the height math on a 470 with about 41.5 inches of cargo height: a 13.4-inch drawer leaves you around 28 inches above the top deck. That's plenty for a fridge on a slide or a flat sleeping surface, but it also means the drawer is in the truck every day, whether you're camping or not. Drawers organize gear well; they don't give you a counter, a sink, or a stove stand. You'll still be setting up a table behind the truck.
Plate systems: the newer GX 550 approach
For the GX 550, the aftermarket has moved toward modular plate systems. Goose Gear's GX 550 rear plate is built for non-third-row trucks only, installs entirely with bolts, and is fully reversible to stock. It has hatches in the rear cargo area and just behind the second row, and you choose modules to fill it, including a camp kitchen module, an icebox module, and single, double, and side-by-side drawers. Second-row seat-delete plates are sold as a 40% driver-side or 60% passenger-side option and require the rear plate; one listing puts the 10-inch module-based driver-side delete at $895 on its own. The parts are made to order and typically ship in 4 to 8 weeks.
Goose Gear also builds a side-by-side drawer module for the GX 470 that measures about 41-3/8 inches wide, 10 inches tall, and 36 inches deep with a fitted top plate. A plate system is lighter and more flexible than a full drawer kit, but a fully built-out plate with modules and seat deletes adds up quickly, and it still turns the GX into a vehicle that's set up for camping all year.

The portable box option: what fits in a GX
A portable box skips the install, the lead time, and the year-round commitment. The VOZ Camp Kitchen measures 47.6 inches long, 19.3 inches wide, and 11.4 inches tall closed, and weighs about 57 pounds. Inside the weatherproof case you get a butane stove and frypan, a foldable sink with a USB-rechargeable faucet, a 2-gallon water tank, a cutting board, an LED light, and a utensil set, so it brings the counter, sink, and burner that drawers don't.
Here's how it loads in each generation:
- GX 470, third row out: at 47.6 inches, the box is longer than the roughly 43 inches of floor behind the second row, and longer than the 43.5 inches between the wheel wells at floor level. The cargo area widens to about 54 inches above the wells, so measure the wheel-well height in your truck to see whether the box can ride crosswise above them.
- GX 470 or 460 with drawers: this is the cleanest combination. Both Front Runner kits are well over 50 inches wide and about 35 inches deep, so the box sits crosswise on the top deck with room to spare, and on a 470 about 28 inches of headroom leaves plenty over an 11.4-inch box.
- GX 460, no drawers: with the third row folded, measure the flat floor width and depth and compare them to 47.6 by 19.3 inches. If the box won't lie crosswise, fold a section of the second row and load it lengthwise.
- GX 550: the two-row Overtrail has the most room behind the second row. On three-row trucks, fold the third row, measure, and decide between crosswise and lengthwise with a second-row section folded.
Whichever way it goes in, push it against a seatback or the drawer face and strap it to the tie-down points so 57 pounds doesn't slide on washboard. Our guide to a camp kitchen behind the rear seats of an SUV covers more loading patterns, including sharing space with a fridge.
Which setup makes sense for your GX
- Weekend camper, daily-driven GX: portable box plus a folding table. No install, full cargo area on Monday.
- GX 470 or 460 already running drawers: keep the drawers for recovery gear and dry food, and ride the box on top for cooking and dishes.
- Dedicated GX 550 Overtrail build: a plate system makes sense if you camp most weekends and accept the lead time. Pair it with a box if you want a sink and a cook surface you can carry to the picnic table.
One safety note for any GX: don't idle the engine while you cook behind an open rear door or liftgate. The CDC warns that when only the tailgate of an SUV is open, carbon monoxide from the exhaust can be pulled inside the vehicle.
FAQ
Can I remove the third row in a GX 460?
Not easily. Owners on Club Lexus describe the 2010–2023 third row as a fold-into-floor design that isn't removable, unlike the bolt-out seats in the GX 470. That's one reason Front Runner's GX 460 drawer kit is designed to install without removing the third row.
Does the GX 550 have a swing-out rear door like older GX models?
No. The 2024 GX 550 replaced the side-hinged door with a power liftgate and a rear window that opens separately. That gives you overhead cover while you cook, like a 4Runner.
Are plate systems for the GX 550 compatible with third-row trucks?
The Goose Gear rear plate and plate-based seat deletes we found are listed for non-third-row GX 550s only. If you have a three-row truck, confirm fitment with the maker before ordering.
Will a full camp kitchen box fit behind the second row of a GX?
Not lengthwise with the seats up. A 47.6-inch box is longer than the roughly 43 inches owners measure behind the second row of a GX 470, so plan to load it crosswise above the wheel wells, on top of a drawer system, or lengthwise with a seat section folded.
