Camp Kitchen for a Tesla Model Y: Frunk, Sub-Trunk, and Camp Mode Cooking Setups That Fit

Compact electric SUV at a wooded campsite at dusk with front and rear trunks open and a camp stove on a table beside it.

The Model Y is one of the most popular car-camping platforms in the country: a flat floor with the seats folded, a frunk, a deep sub-trunk, and Camp Mode keeping the cabin comfortable all night. The kitchen is where most owners get stuck, because the gear has to fit the car, and all the cooking has to happen outside it.

Model Y cargo space by the numbers

Cubic feet tell you how much the car holds. Inches tell you whether a rigid camp kitchen box will go in. Tesla's owner's manual gives the official volumes, and published measurements fill in the inches. Here is what a 5-seat Model Y gives you:

Space Size
Frunk About 4.0–4.1 cu ft
Behind the second row, seats up About 29–30 cu ft
Behind the first row, second row folded About 71–76 cu ft, depending on version
Rear load floor, seats up Roughly 36–43 in deep
Load floor, seats folded Roughly 72 in long
Floor width About 37 in at the narrowest point, up to about 44 in
Liftgate opening About 43 in wide × 26 in tall
Sub-trunk (under the rear floor) About 27 in wide, 18 in front-to-back, 15 in deep

The inch figures come from owner and accessory-shop measurements, not from Tesla, and they shift a little between the 2020–2024 car and the refreshed 2025-and-later Model Y. Measure your own car with the seats in the position you will actually camp in. The 7-seat version has a different rear layout entirely, and most aftermarket camping platforms do not fit it.

Where a camp kitchen box fits in a Model Y

An all-in-one box is the fastest kitchen you can own, because the stove, sink, water, and utensils all travel in one case and you lift it out once. We'll use the VOZ Camp Kitchen as the reference case. Closed, it measures 47.6″ × 19.3″ × 11.4″ and weighs about 57 lbs. Inside are a built-in butane stove, a collapsible sink with a USB-rechargeable faucet, a 2-gallon water tank, and more than 30 cooking items in a weatherproof case.

Here is the honest math. At 47.6 inches, the box is longer than the seats-up load floor is deep, and wider than the gap between the wheel arches, so it will not lie flat behind the upright second row. The Model Y's rear seat back splits 60/40, though, and that solves it:

  • Fold the right (40) side. The box slides in lengthwise along the right wall. At 11.4 inches tall it stays well below the window line, and the 60 side stays up for one or two passengers.
  • Fold both sides for two people. You get a flat floor about 72 inches long. The box rides along one side while you drive. At camp it comes out to become the kitchen, which frees the whole floor for sleeping.
  • Loading: slide it in nose-first. The 11.4-inch height clears the roughly 26-inch liftgate opening with plenty of room, and 57 lbs is an easy two-person lift at bumper height. Solo, set one end on the bumper and push.

The trade-off is the same one every SUV owner faces. For the full comparison of how one box rides in trucks, vans, trailers, and RVs, see our vehicle camp kitchen guide.

Sleeping platforms vs. a kitchen box

Tesla accessory stores sell bed-platform systems built for the Model Y. They raise the floor and put slide-out drawers underneath. One widely sold line offers a low-profile version with a single 22-inch drawer sized for most induction cooktops (the cooktop is sold separately), plus larger versions with three 22-inch drawers or two 36-inch drawers. The seller lists them as fitting 2020-and-later Model Y vehicles, except 7-seaters.

A platform makes sense if you sleep in the car on most trips and want gear hidden under the mattress. The cost is that it stays in the car and takes up the cargo floor every day. A loose box is the better fit if the Model Y is also your commuter. It comes out in one lift, the car goes back to normal on Monday, and the kitchen still works at a tailgate, a cabin, or in the back of a friend's truck.

You can also do both. With a low platform installed, a flat stove and cookware go into the drawer, and the box rides on top of the platform. Before you rely on that, check that the platform height plus 11.4 inches still clears your liftgate opening.

Using the frunk and sub-trunk for the small stuff

The two spaces most owners underuse are made for kitchen overflow. The sub-trunk is a deep tub, about 18 inches front-to-back and 15 inches deep. That's room for a single-burner cassette stove in its case, a nested cookware set, and a dish tub. It's also the right spot for anything that would slide around the main floor.

The frunk holds about 4 cubic feet. That's best for light, crushable things you want to grab without unloading the back: utensils, a spice kit, paper towels, a folded water bag, and trash bags. Before you pack fuel canisters into any closed compartment that sits in the sun, read our guide on storing propane and butane canisters during hot-car transport.

Camp Mode is for sleeping, not for cooking

Camp Mode keeps the cabin temperature and airflow where you set them and keeps the USB ports and the low-voltage outlet powered. Tesla's manual says the low-voltage outlet on the left side of the rear trunk stays live during Camp Mode. That's a handy place to recharge the camp kitchen's USB faucet overnight. Owners typically report losing about 10 percent of their charge over eight hours, more in cold weather. Camp Mode cannot be turned on below 20 percent, and it disables the alarm and auto-lock, so lock the car manually before you sleep.

What Camp Mode does not do is make the cabin a safe place to cook. A butane or propane stove produces carbon monoxide, and the CDC warns that opening doors, windows, or tent flaps does not prevent dangerous CO buildup from fuel-burning devices (CDC MMWR report on camping CO deaths). Cook on the ground or a table, a few feet from the open liftgate, and never under the raised hatch with the doors open to the sleeping area. Even with an electric cooktop, cooking grease and steam don't belong in a car you are about to sleep in.

Induction vs. butane on a Model Y: the outlet reality

This is where the Model Y differs from the electric trucks. Most Model Ys have no built-in 120V household outlet. The console's low-voltage outlet is rated at 12 amps continuous, which works out to roughly 145 watts at 12 volts. That's enough for a 12V fridge or a phone, nowhere near enough for a cooktop. Portable induction burners for US outlets typically top out at 1,800 watts.

Setup What it takes Best for
Butane stove (built into the box, or cassette) Fuel canisters only Any Model Y, any trip
Induction via Powershare An eligible Model Y, Tesla's Outlet Adapter, and the Mobile Connector Model Y Performance and other eligible trims
Induction via a portable power station A station that can sustain 1,800W Owners already carrying a large station

Tesla added vehicle-to-load to the Model Y Performance in fall 2025. It works through the Outlet Adapter, which plugs into the Mobile Connector at the charge port and supplies 120 volts at 20 amps, or up to 2.4 kW. That covers an 1,800-watt induction burner. Tesla has since extended Powershare to some other trims, but eligibility depends on the car's hardware, so check the Tesla app for your vehicle before buying the adapter. Tesla also sets a reserve for driving, and Powershare stops exporting power when the battery reaches it.

For every other Model Y, butane is the practical answer, and it's what the all-in-one box is built around. For the full range-cost math and how this compares on electric trucks, see our EV camping kitchen guide for Rivian, Lightning, and Cybertruck.

FAQ

Will a full camp kitchen box fit in a Model Y with the seats up?

Not lying flat. The seats-up floor is roughly 36–43 inches deep and narrows to about 37 inches between the wheel arches, so a box close to 48 inches long needs one rear seat section folded. Smaller modular gear can fit with all seats up.

Can I cook inside my Model Y with Camp Mode on?

Not with a fuel-burning stove. Butane and propane stoves produce carbon monoxide, and the CDC warns that an open door or window is not enough ventilation. Cook outside the car, a few feet from the open liftgate.

Can I run an induction cooktop from a Model Y?

Only on Model Ys that support Powershare vehicle-to-load through Tesla's Outlet Adapter, which supplies up to 2.4 kW at 120 volts. The standard low-voltage outlet cannot power a cooktop.

What should go in the frunk vs. the sub-trunk?

Put heavy, bulky items in the sub-trunk, such as a cassette stove, nested cookware, and a dish tub. The frunk is for light items you grab often, like utensils, spices, towels, and trash bags.
