The Short Answer: Outside, and Not Just Barely Outside

How Fast CO Builds Up: Real Numbers From Stove Tests

The best data on camp stoves in enclosed spaces comes from tent studies, because tents are the closed space campers actually cook in. A 2023 study in Wilderness & Environmental Medicine ran three isobutane/propane canister stoves inside a three-season tent while heating a pot of water, logging carbon monoxide every minute for 15 minutes.
